Alfresa will obtain exclusive sales rights within Japan’s healthcare sector for solutions provided by Ember.
July 30, 2026
By: Patrick Lavery
Editor’s Take: The partnership could streamline a path for specialty pharmaceuticals directly from medical institutions into patients’ homes.
Ember LifeSciences and Alfresa Corporation have a new capital and business alliance to improve cold chain logistics quality in Japan.
The Alfresa Group holds pole position in Japan in terms of domestic net sales in the pharmaceutical wholesale business. Meanwhile, Ember has won awards—particularly for its temperature control mug—as a provider of advanced pharmaceutical cold chain solutions.
Combined, the companies will evaluate the Ember Cube, and related technologies, to be integrated with Alfresa’s Home Care Delivery service. This could enhance the pathway for specialty pharmaceuticals from medical institutions directly into patients’ homes.
The Ember Cube 2 recently garnered another honor for its company, the “Best of the Best Red Dot Design” award. It has a reusable design and can maintain a temperature range of 2°C to 8°C for more than 72 hours.
Clay Alexander, Ember Founder and CEO, said Ember holds Alfresa’s “legacy of excellence” and leadership in Japan in “highest regard.”
“As our Ember Cube 2 continues to gain international acclaim,” Alexander said, “this strategic investment and distribution alliance [is] pivotal. Together, Alfresa and Ember share a profound commitment to bringing unprecedented precision, confidence and reliability to pharmaceutical cold chain logistics.”
Offering additional comments, Alfresa Representative Director and President Yusuke Fukujin said the number of temperature-sensitive products is increasing annually. This is driven by rapid growth in pharmaceuticals and vaccines, and demands “absolute precision” in cold chain logistics.
“Alfresa has been strengthening its capabilities in this space through continuous investment in next-generation technologies,” Fukujin said. “This partnership with Ember … reinforces our commitment to advance cold chain pharmaceutical logistics in the Japanese market.”
Financially, in the agreement, Alfresa obtains exclusive sales rights within the Japanese healthcare sector for Ember-provided solutions. Alfresa is providing financial support for Ember to expand its business through an investment in Series A preferred stock. Additional Series A investors include Amgen, Cardinal Health, Carrier, and Sea Court Capital.
